The Patek Philippe Calatrava is one of the most iconic watch collections of all time, with each of its time-only members carrying a distinct, symbolic weightiness in their lightweight, formal wear.
.
This example is the ref. 1491. The extract lists the date it was sold; 4th December 1951. The Reference 1491 boasts an 18ct Gold Case, with wonderful ‘Riccio’ Scroll lugs. First released in 1940, it remained Patek’s most exclusive dress watch until production ceased in 1958.
.
The 18ct Yellow Gold Case is 34mm in diameter, excluding the Patek Philippe signed crown, is large for the period and certainly for a Patek Philippe dress watch. In fact, only Patek chronographs were larger. The lugs also elongate the watch considerably, measuring 43mm overall, end to end, making the watch seem larger than 34mm on the wrist.
